Mozilla Firefox Firefox is browser which rivals Microsoft Internet Explorer. While both browsers are free Firefox is open source and runs on all common operating systems. Many developers also create useful AddOns like "TamperData" and "FireBug."

Thunderbird Thunderbird is an email client built on the same platform as Mozilla Firefox. While people like it for many reasons, I use it for its flexibility. For example, I have an extension which allows me to automatically edit my Google calendar, and thus website, directly from Thunderbird.

Jahshaka Jahshaka is an open-source, free alternative to Adobe AfterEffects. It's still very rough around the edges, but it can perform useful tasks such as green screen video editing. This software has a very steep learning curve.

Blender Blender is an open-source, free 3D graphics program capable of rendering complex graphics and creating 3D models for video games. This software has a steep learning curve, but it is extremely powerful.
